Stampin' Up! Basics 3D Embossing Folders Birthday Card, Layering Leaves (2024)

Welcome 2024! I hope your New Year has had a positive start. I love January 1 for the new, blank calendar. Fresh and clean and ready for adventure.

Today’s card is a simple card with limited stamping. I used four different embossing folders to create the front of the card. The Basics Embossing Folders set contains three lovely embossing folders. For the fourth folder, I used the Softly Sophisticated embossing folder which is a FREE Sale-a-bration choice at the $100 level. The Softly Sophisticated Bundle includes the Softly Sophisticated Stamp Set and the Softly Sophisticated Embossing Folder.

For each embossing folder, I cut a 5-1/2″ x 4-1/4″ piece of card stock and embossed it with one of the embossing folders using the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss machine. I emboss a quarter of a piece of card stock because it will create already embossed scraps that I can use later. They’re often good for tags. And you’ll see that when a piece of embossed cardstock went missing during my live video, I already had another quarter embossed with the Parisian Flourish 3D Embossing Folder. It’s retired, so for this card we’ll stick with my original plan and use all three Basics Embossing Folders and the Softly Sophisticated embossing folder.

Most of this card is about the cutting. I know there are 1/8″ cuts, but truly with a well marked paper trimmer they’re not any harder than the 1/4″ cuts. The Stampin’ Up! paper trimmer is very well marked with 1/16″, 1/8″ and 1/4″ segments. If your trimmer doesn’t have these markings there are self adhesive ruler guides available for purchase. Or, you can purchase a new Stampin’ Up! Trimmer from me. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with it!

For my card, I used Gorgeous Grape in a basically monochromatic card. My card base is 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ and scored at 4-1/4″. I folded the card base and burnished the fold with my bone folder. I cut the following pieces from another piece of Gorgeous Grape I cut the following mat pieces: 3″ x 2-3/8″, 2″ x 2-3/8″, 1-7/8″ x 1-1/2″ and 3-1/4″ x 1-1/2″. From the four embossing folders I cut pieces that were 1/8″ smaller than the mat pieces. I cut the thatched Basics Embossing Folders at 2-7/8″ x 2-1/4″, the stars Basics Embossing Folders at 1-7/8″ x 2-1/4″, the dots Basics Embossing Folder at 1-3/4″ x 1-3/8″, the Stars Basics Embossing Folders and the Softly Sophisticated Embossing Folder at 3-1/8″ x 1-3/8″. I glued the top pieces to the mat pieces.

I arranged the pieces with the thatched at the top left, the stars below it, the dots at the top right and the Softly Sophisticated at the bottom right. If you choose other embossing folders, just keep in mind that you don’t want similar embossed patterns next to each other UNLESS they’re all similar. In my opinion, since I have two high and two low designs I put them diagonally from each other to balance my card front. I adhered them to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

For the sentiment oval, I stamped with Gorgeous Grape ink on Gorgeous Grape card stock using the Best Wishes sentiment and the dotty texture stamp (stamped off once) from the Layering Leaves Stamp Set. I used the Modern Oval Punch to cut out the sentiment. I added Stampin’ Seal to the back of the sentiment oval and used a Z pattern to place the ribbon. I added Stampin’ Dimensionals to the back of the Modern Oval sentiment and adhered it to the front of the card. I placed three Gorgeous Grape embellisments from the Glossy Dot Assortment on the front of the card to complete it.

For the inside sentiment, I used Gorgeous Grape ink and stamped the So Happy to Celebrate You sentiment on the Basic White inside layer. I used the texture stamp in the bottom right corner and stamped three times.

For the envelope flap, I cut a piece of Gorgeous Grape 2-1/4″ x 6″ and scored it randomly on the long side using the Simply Scored Scoring Tool. I then turned it with the short side up and scored two lines together, then skipped a few sections, then two lines together until I reached the other edge of the cardstock. I’ve used this technique many times before when I don’t have a DSP and it always gives such a lovely look.

To finish the envelope, I stamped the front with the texture stamp three times and then stamped the leaves from the Layering Leaves stamp set on to the front of the card over the texture.

I have a variety of stamps, dies and embellishments. My stamps and dies are all gently used and most were purchased within the last two years (although some may be “vintage”). Dies might be on magnet cards as I did not start saving the original packaging until just recently. Designer Series Paper and embellishments are new in unopened packages unless otherwise stated.
