Necromunda is a vast miniature skirmish game that Games Workshop has released models and rules for since 2017. It’s a game of gangs fighting against each other in the desperate conditions on the Imperial Hive World of Necromunda in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and as the years have progressed, the game has had a lot of stuff released for it.

The way Necromunda works, it’s not always easy to figure out where to look for the rules for your gang, or to get an overview of what options your gang has in terms of fighters and upgrades.

In this Necromunda Gang Overview, we go through all gangs and all factions you can play in the game, where to find their rules, their lore (the short version!) and what miniatures and upgrades are unique to each gang.

At the end of the article, there’s also a section collecting all the non-gang specific models currently available for the game, such as “neutral” vehicles, Hangers-Ons, Brutes and so on.

House Orlock

Who are House Orlock?

Orlock gangs are some of the most numerous on Necromunda in general, present both in the Hives and out in the Wastes, where they control the mines and serve as protection for the trade caravans between the Hives. Their biggest military advantage is the cheap mass production of good projectile-based weaponry such as autoguns and combat shotguns, but they’re fearsome in close combat as well with their hammers, combat knives and snarling cyber-mastiffs. While being one of the first gangs released for the game, they’re very up to date since they were one of two launch factions for the new Ash Wastes “season” of the game, which finally gave them the armed vehicles their lore has always told that they had access to.

House Goliath

Who are House Goliath?

Goliath gangs stand a head taller than most other gangs, consisting of vatborn, physically imposing brutes as they are. The Goliaths run the forges and metalworks of Necromunda, and they go into battle trusting the strength of both their steel and their bodies, wielding great hammers, axes and huge guns (literally as well as figuratively). Since they were one of two launch gangs for Necromunda in 2017, Goliath gangs benefit from a large amount of Forge World model releases, a strong place in the lore of the game, and a full upgrade set of codex, expansion box, upgrade packs and vehicles, so if you want the full Necromunda experience from the get go, Goliath gangs are a good place to start.

House Escher

Who are House Escher?

House Escher is the place to go on Necromunda for all sorts of powerful toxins and chemicals, as well as exotic beast and pets. House Escher is immediately recognisable on the streets of the Hives due to the fact that nearly all its gangers are women, due to a genetic defect affecting most of the men of their clan. The Eschers fight with speed, ferocity and finesse with their knives, swords, lasguns, bows and toxins, and in the Ash Wastes, they zip by on swift Cutter jetbikes, often accompanied by exotic beasts. In the game, they’re one of the two original launch gangs for the game, and as such, they have access to all kinds of releases such as expansions, a codex, upgrades and Vehicles.

House Van Saar

Who are House Van Saar

House Van Saar have access to the best weapons technology among all the House gangs on Necromunda. This is because deep within their territory, they zealously guard a Standard Template Construct system capable of producing technology more advanced than what most other ordinary humans in the Imperium will ever get within a mile of.

This technological advantage comes at a price, however: Even though the Van Saar owe their success to their technology, the great STC system has also irradiated them to such a degree that they have to wear special bodysuits to avoid being devoured by disease.

The Van Saar are a pretty up to date gang with a codex, gang expansion and several upgrade sets, but they have yet to receive faction-specific Vehicles.

House Cawdor/Redemptionists

Who are the House of Cawdor

Of all the House gangs of Necromunda, noone takes their faith in the Emperor as seriously as House Cawdor. The entire House is a kind of mass cult dedicated to the Emperor, but it lives far from the Imperial glory of the spire. Instead, it is a kind of cargo cult of the Imperial Creed, practiced in the slums and shantytowns deep in the Hives, with tenets of faith based on crazed prophets and street sermons, and its warriors armed with ramshackle weapons made to imitate cracked mosaics found in church ruins depicting the Custodes who guard the Emperor.

While Cawdor gangs certainly aren’t the best armed or armoured among the gangs, they are the most numerous gangs, overwhelming their opponent with hordes of believers burning with religious fervour. House Cawdor is also home to those literally burning, in the shape of their Redemptionist Gangs who walk the streets of Necromunda, flamers in hand, purging the faithless in holy fire.

Being one of the main gang Houses in Necromunda, Cawdor gangs have a codex, gang expansion and several upgrades, and will soon also have a dedicated vehicle.

House Delaque

Who are House Delaque

Of all the main House gangs, House Delaque is by far the most mysterious. Its gangers barely look human: Tall, slender and pale in their dark long trenchcoats, Delaque gangs prowl the shadows and backstreets of Necromunda, dealing as much in espionage and subterfuge as in raw firepower.

Some even say they, in fact, aren’t human at all – that they’re actually an alien presence on Necromunda, which one might be inclined to agree with when seeing their huge-headed psykers and terrifying cephalopod-like robot companions.

The only thing certain about House Delaque is that they don’t mind all the tall tales about them: Noone will ever know the truth about the House of Shadows, and that’s just how they want it to be, as they spread their influence across the planet.

In the game, House Delaque is one of the main House gangs, almost complete with a codex, gang expansion and upgrades, but no dedicated Vehicle so far.

Palanite Enforcers

Who are the Palanite Enforcers?

At first glance, one might assume that the Palanite Enforcers are the police force of Necromunda, clad in their uniforms and riot gear as they are. This is a half-truth at best, however. While the Enforcers do present themselves as representatives of the law on Necromunda, its more precise to see them as the official gang of House Helmawr, the ruling Imperial House of Necromunda.

They enforce the will of Lord Helmawr, not some objective, impartial law that’s equal for everyone. In their thick-plated armour, protected behind their riot shields and armed with shock batons, sniper rifles and boltguns, the Enforcers are gangers with the unfair advantage of having the backing of the most powerful House on the planet – but they also have a constant target on their back for representing “the man” in a world where few have a positive view of their oppressors.

Palanite Enforcers aren’t one of the main House gangs in Necromunda, but they have two main gang boxes available, and offer a fresh perspective on gang war in the game in the way that they’re sort of representatives of the establishment.

Corpse Grinder Cults

Who are the Corpse Grinder Cults?

The Corpsegrinder Cults are made up of those unfortunate souls whose job it is to butcher the dead bodies streaming into the slaughterhouses of Necromunda to be repurposed as nutrition. In that process, they have gone mad and have started a rebellion in the name of the Lord of Skin and Sinew (who is probably the Chaos God Khorne), spreading their creed through merciless murder rampages across the Hives with their chaincleavers and flensing saws.

The Corpsegrinder Cults are by no means one of the main gangs, with only a gang box, an upgrade set and a Bounty Hunter available, but they offer a unique experience, being an almost melee-only gang firmly on the side of the forces of Chaos.

Chaos Helot Cults

Who are the Chaos Helot Cults?

Chaos Helot Cults are groups of Hive citizens who have pledged their allegiance to the Forces of Chaos, rather than putting their trust in the Emperor – or the protection of a House gang – and their deranged chanting and fearless assaults are the stuff of many dark cautionary tales on Necromunda.

In the game, Chaos Helot Cults are one of the “sandbox” gangs with no dedicated models, but with tons of potential for telling a cool outsider story of life on Necromunda. You could even start out as another gang and let that gang turn Helot by being corrupted by Chaos!

Who are the Genestealer Cults?

The Genestealer Cults may look human, but they’re not: They’re a sort of civilisational virus, a genestrain planted on Necromunda by the alien Tyranids, and then slowly assimilating and growing more and more human-like, until one day, they rise up among the working classes to overthrow the powers of the world in service of ther Tyranid masters.

The Genestealer Cults don’t have any Necromunda-specific releases, but benefit from many of the kits available to the Warhammer 40,000 Genestealer Cults army, making them one of the non-main gangs with the best model range. They’re another gang you can narratively pose as another gang before they reveal themselves as being servants of the Four-Armed Emperor, ready to overthrow their oppressors.

What models can I use for the Genestealer Cults?

Core Gang Box

Necromunda Gang Overview (All Houses and Models Released) (113)

The most obvious core gang box for Genestealer Cults (even though you can use lots of kits and give them hybrid heads) is the 40k Genestealer Cults Neophyte Hybrids box, which contains many of the most iconic weapons for the gang, as well as being an awesome kit full of character.

Gang Expansion

Necromunda Gang Overview (All Houses and Models Released) (114)

Genestealer Cults have no dedicated gang expansions, but Aberrants and Acolyte Hybrids are great candidates for expansions, and you also have to find a Genestealer hero to be your Alpha or Adept.

Vehicles

Necromunda Gang Overview (All Houses and Models Released) (115)

This is a bit of a weird one:

Genestealer Cults gangs don’t have any faction-specific Vehicles, but most of the generic Vehicles available to all gangs are actually 40K Genestealer Cults models, such as the Wolfquad, Ridgerunner and Rockgrinder, so they fit the aesthetic of the gang perfectly.

Upgrade Sets

There are no upgrade sets for Genestealer Cults, but the Neophytes fit the Imperial human standard, so you can equip them with almost anything.

Additional Releases

There are no Necromunda-specific Genestealer Cults additional releases.

Venator Gang

Who are the Venator Gang?

The Venator gangs are bounty hunters and Hired Guns paid by one of the Great Houses to carry out some mission within the Hives. They consist of all sorts of people, from ex-military agents, deserters and former House gang members, joined by a common cause: To earn as many credits as they can by putting their deadly skills to work.

The Venator gang is one of two completely “sandbox” gang templates in Necromunda, as they basically allow you to build any gang you want. As such, if you’re playing in a game group, be aware that it’s very possibly to build “OP” or “broken” gangs with their rules, but they’re also the perfect template for making up your own cool background story and identity for your gang.

As the original sandbox gang, the Venators are also designed to let you field an entire gang of the Forge World Hired Guns and Bounty Hunters released during the first years of this edition of Necromunda, so if you want to field Squats and Beastmen, this could be just the gang for you.

What models can I use for the Venator Gang?

Core Gang Box

There is no core gang box for Venators, since literally any model can fit into a Venator gang one way or another.

Gang Expansion

There are also no gang expansions for Venators, unless the Hired Guns models from Forge World can be considered as such.

Vehicles

The Venators have access to the generic Vehicles and Wasteland Workshop found in Book of the Outlands

Upgrade Sets

There are no upgrade sets for Venators, other than your 40k/Necromunda/Kill Team bit box, which is bound to be full of stuff they can use.

Additional Releases

There are no faction-specific additional releases for the Venator gang.

Outcasts Gang

Who are the Outcasts Gang?

The Outcasts are, well, the outcasts of Necromundan society. They’re all the ones who don’t fit in any other gang, but under the banners of the rebellious Lady Credo (heavily featured in the Aranthian Succession storyline for Necromunda), they’ve found new purpose.

The Outcasts gang is the second, newest, “sandbox” gang in the game, but also has a dedicated box it can use, and with the great importance it has in the current storyline, it might be the most relevant choice today for a gang of your own making.

What models can I use for the Outcasts Gang?

Core Gang Box

Necromunda Gang Overview (All Houses and Models Released) (118)

The basic Hive Scum of an Outcasts gang are available in the Hive Scum box with 4 models in it, but remember that you can field almost anything in an Outcasts gang, so don’t feel limited to these guys and their relatively few weapon options.

Gang Expansion

The Outcasts gang doesn’t have a gang expansion available, but they don’t need one anyway, since they can field mostly anything.

Vehicles

Outcasts don’t have any faction-specific Vehicles, but they’re the perfect candidates for building their own Vehicles in the Wasteland Workshop, since they’ve already got the DIY mindset for it.

Upgrade Sets

As in the paragraphs above, there are no upgrade sets for the Outcasts, or all upgrade sets can be considered Outcasts gang upgrade sets.

Additional Releases

Ashwood Stranger
Necromunda Gang Overview (All Houses and Models Released) (119)

The Ashwood Stranger is available as a resin kit from Forge World. He can be the Leader of an Outcasts gang or a Bounty Hunter for other gangs. His rules can be found in the Book of the Outcast.

Slave Ogryn Gang

Who are the Slave Ogryn Gang?

The Ogryn are huge, strong abhumans who are tolerated in Necromundan society for their utility, but mostly kept as slaves in the factories. Sometimes, however, a group of Slave Ogryn break free and form their own gang, trying to improve their lot in life using the weapons and tools that are often literally grafted onto them.

The Slave Ogryn are a very niche gang, with one sort-of-out-of-production kit (or one kit available that you need to buy three of to build a complete gang) and their rules tucked away in the Goliath book, but the models are amazing, and you can repurpose them as single Brutes for other gangs later.

Instead, they offer the horribly named ‘Jotunn’ H-Grade Industrial Servitor Ogryns box, which is just a third of what was in the Slave Ogryn Gang box, so you would have to buy that smaller box three times to make a full gang – but they’re awesome models, so if you like Ogryns, it’s totally worth it.

Gang Expansion

The Slave Ogryn Gang doesn’t have any gang expansion boxes available, and probably never will.

Vehicles

The Slave Ogryn Gang doesn’t have any dedicated Vehicles, but as far as we can read the rules, they’re absolutely able to use the Wasteland Workshop, so you can model them on tiny dirtbikes if you like!

Upgrade Sets

The Slave Ogryn Gang doesn’t have any upgrade sets, but you can combine it with other 40K Ogryn kits to some degree, and the Slave Ogryn sprues themselves are full of options.

Additional Releases

There are no additional releases for the Slave Ogryn gang, but they are themselves a sort of additional release, since other gangs can take one Ogryn per gang as a Brute.

Ash Wastes Nomads

Who are the Ash Wastes Nomads?

Ash Wastes Nomads don’t call the Hive Cities their home. Instead, they dwell in the Great Equatorial Wastes among sandstorms, toxic clouds and exotic beasts, living off the land and raiding trade routes and settlements.

No gang is as well-suited to surviving outside the civilized areas as these tribal warriors. They might not have access to the most advanced technology, but they make up for it by allying themselves with the beasts of the Wastes and by using their knowledge of the land to their advantage.

Ironhead Squat Prospectors

Who are the Ironhead Squat Prospectors?

The Ironhead Squat Prospectors live in the Great Equatorial Wastes in their mobile fortresses, or among the humans in settlements such as Cinderak City.

They are dwarf-like abhumans, but they’ve been a part of Necromunda’s history for centuries, being responsible for the terraforming operations that make living on the planet possible. They’re industries, fiercely loyal to their kin, and great afficionados of heavy ranged weapons and weaponized mining tools.
