With summer just around the corner, it’s a super important time to pay attention to hydration. We’re sweating more, it may be more dry- depending on where we live- and we are more active (hopefully!). Hydration keeps our whole system functioning at its peak, and is key to beautiful hair and skin.

Hydration doesn’t have to come from just water- it can also be fulfilled from juicy, watery fruits and veggies.

My Creamy Ginger Smoothie Recipe has some of the best hydrating and beautifying components and a touch of heat (non-irritating though!) that will keep your afternoons full of energy and great digestion!

Aromatic Beautifying Root: Ginger

Aromatic, pungent and a little bit of spice, ginger certainly has the power to add a special flavor and zest to many dishes (like Asian stir fries), and to our fresh fruits and veggies. And there’s usually no shortage in finding fresh ginger root since it’s available year round in your local market’s produce section.

Ginger is one of the best all around health and beauty foods—promoting detoxification. In fact, I frequently use it in my Immunity Tea, slicing it thinly and steeping it in boiling water for a few minutes. As you know, keeping our body clean from the inside really plays a role on how we’ll look and feel on the outside, so what we choose to put into our body is really where it all starts.

Ginger also elevates your metabolism and has immune boosting action– being a warming root without the irritation, and is recommended for all body types. Ginger promotes healthy sweating, which is often helpful during cold and flu season. A good sweat really helps with the detoxification process too!

Ginger has been used for years, in Chinese and Indian medicine, as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat numerous conditions, such as flatulence, jaundice, and menstrual difficulties (we need all the help we can get, right?!).

How to Choose and Store Your Fresh Ginger

You can easily find fresh ginger at your local store, but try to opt for organic over the conventionally marketed variety, when possible. This is because organic varieties are grown in better soil that isn’t soaked in fertilizers and pesticides (as it is a root).

Because ginger is so concentrated you don’t need to use very much to receive its benefits. So don’t get intimidated by the sometimes daunting price per pound. Ginger is so light, a little bit can really go a long way, and can last you all week.

Choose ginger roots that feel firm all over with a light brown skin, and a beautiful gingery aroma when held close to the nose. We want to avoid any that have dark, soft or moist spots (which is a big warning sign for mold!), or those that look particularly dried out, with wrinkled skins.

Pick out the nubs that feel fresh, and in their peak. Trust me, you’ll be able to intuitively tell which is the fresher versus past its peak.

In addition to all that yummy ginger flavor and heat, this recipe has some of the best hydrating and beautifying components found in the coconut water, fresh lime juice, cucumber, pear, and spinach. Add a little sweetness with the dates and you’ll be raring to go!
