Christmas is a time for family, friends, and of course, food! There are so many delicious Christmas snacks to choose from, but one of my personal favorites is chocolate covered pretzels.

Like Chocolate Covered Peanuts, the sweet and salty combination is irresistible, and chocolate pretzels are so easy to make. Simply melt chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, and then dip the pretzels into the chocolate.

I love adding Christmas sprinkles for an extra festive touch. Once the chocolate has hardened, you can enjoy your delicious Christmas snack or wrap them up to give as gifts!

They're simple to make and everyone will love them. Plus, you can leave aplate of these out for Santa on Christmas Eve.I think his reindeer love chocolate!

💭What chocolate to use for chocolate covered pretzels?

For the best results, you'll want to use a high quality chocolate that's not too sweet. Dark chocolate is a good choice, but you could also use milk or white chocolate.

If you're using milk or white chocolate, you might want to add a little bit of shortening to help the chocolate flow more easily. I like to use almond bark or candy melts for dipping pretzels, fruit or cookies like I do with my Shortbread Cookies.

💭What kind of pretzels for chocolate covered pretzels?

When you're preparing chocolate covered pretzels, you need to use a sturdy pretzel. One that can hold up to dipping in the melted chocolate and not fall apart.

I always use Utz Pretzel Rods. These pretzel rods are great for dipping and decorating!

💭How early can I make chocolate covered pretzels

If you're looking to give them as gifts, you can make them up to two weeks in advance and store them in an airtight container. Be sure to wrap each pretzel individually and attach a gift tag so that they stay fresh and crispy.

💭Tips for Making Chocolate Covered Pretzels

  • It's really important that you use a sturdy pretzel, which is why I recommend Utz Pretzels.
  • I like to use chocolate and white chocolate almond bark, but you can substitute chocolate chip morsels or candy melts.
  • Over the years I've purchased a few squeeze bottles to put the melted chocolate in.They help give the perfect drizzle effect!
  • Make sure you let the pretzels harden completely on parchment paper. Don't try to use aluminum foil, the pretzels will stick.
  • Store in airtight containers before packaging up for friends and family.

💭Recipe Variations

  • You can use any color or flavor of chocolate. Even a variety of different colors would be fun for Halloween.

💭How long can you store Chocolate Covered Pretzels?

Chocolate Covered Pretzels can last for up to two weeks if they are stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. However, if they are stored in a humid environment, they will only last for a few days.

So if you want to make sure your Christmas snack lasts, simply place them in an airtight container and keep them in a cool, dark place.

What can I use instead of parchment paper for chocolate covered pretzels? ›

    Chocolate Pretzels FAQs

How healthy are chocolate covered pretzels? ›

Salted pretzels (soft or hard) are generally higher in sodium but lower in sugar and fat. On the other hand, chocolate-covered pretzels are higher in sugar and fat but lower in sodium. All options have a similar fiber content (keep in mind the soft pretzel serving is much bigger).

What kind of chocolate is best for dipping? ›

How do you keep chocolate covered pretzels from turning white? ›

The best way to keep chocolate from blooming is to store it at a steady, moderate temperature away from moisture. Of course you can't control how the chocolate was stored or treated before it reaches you, but once you get it home keep it in a cool, dry place in an airtight container.

Why do my chocolate covered pretzels turn white? ›

Chocolate turning white is due to processes known as 'fat bloom' and 'sugar bloom'. These happen when the cocoa butter or sugar in the chocolate reacts to changes in temperature or exposure to moisture, leading to a white or greyish coating on the surface.

What chocolate is best for dipping strawberries? ›

I like to use semisweet chocolate because I find it has the perfect balance of sweetness for the strawberries. Milk chocolate and white chocolate are a little too sweet for my preference, and they're more challenging to work with when coating. However, if that's your preference, then go for it!

Can I use tin foil instead of wax paper for chocolate covered strawberries? ›

Cover a baking sheet with wax paper.

Parchment paper will work as well. Aluminum foil will prevent sticking just as well, but may leave a pattern on the chocolate strawberries.

It took over 900 years for someone to decide that covering pretzels in chocolate was a good idea! German baker Herr Franz Joseph Leibniz is given credit for the invention of chocolate covered pretzels, when he decided to partner up with a chocolatier in their neighborhood in Hamburg. Fascinating, right?

Can diabetics eat chocolate covered pretzels? ›

Pretzels aren't considered diabetic-friendly foods for many reasons. This snack is known for its notoriously high sugar content, making it difficult for people with diabetes to manage blood sugar levels.

    Can diabetics eat pretzels? ›

You may love their lip-smackin' saltiness, but potato chips, tortilla chips, or corn chips (including those in restaurant nachos), crackers, and pretzels are not the best food choices for people living with diabetes.

What chemical do you dip pretzels in? ›

Traditional Bavarian pretzels are dipped in a lye solution before they are baked. Lye, also known as sodium hydroxide, is essentially the same stuff that's used to make soap and clean drains. It can even dissolve glass.

How do you thin chocolate for dipping pretzels? ›

Alternatively, you can use a bit of vegetable oil or shortening. Start by adding just a small amount (a teaspoon for every 100 grams of chocolate should suffice), stir it in, and see if the chocolate is thin enough for your needs. If not, add a little more, but remember – it's easier to add than to take away!
